View fullsize On the 22nd floor of a tower overlooking Puget Sound lives an open core work space where the exterior is as important as the interior.
View fullsize The intention was to create a space where the outdoors feel within reach, even though there is no exterior access.
View fullsize The owners wanted lighting to emphasize a clear distinction between the core work area and the perimeter surround. We purposely chose not to light the river bench so that the reflections in the water bring the sky inside.
View fullsize The challenge was to use details, materials, and assemblies for lighting that are not conventional office lighting solutions. We utilized the aluminum grating system as a baffle for 2 x 2 LED Flat Panels above to increase visual comfort.
View fullsize Layering of vertical illumination was key to delineating inside core spaces from perimeter window spaces.
View fullsize Suspended LED channels in glass cubicles emphasized the core in contrast to the vertical green walls beyond.
View fullsize The live green walls require an even distribution of 220 footcandles at 4000 degree kelvin light to maintain the plant life. All plant lighting is preset on a control system to half the light output during the day.
View fullsize LED flat panels appear to float like a skylight over the grating, creating the feeling of the outside above.
View fullsize Horizontal and vertical surfaces are assigned to separate circuits for variable scenes and tasks. White boards are evenly lit with LED wallwashers for task lighting. LED flat panels disappear into the shimmery silver ceiling system when turned off.
View fullsize The overall feeling of this unconventional work space was achieved with high efficacy LED sources meeting the prescribed budget and code. Given the exemption of the live green wall, the lighting came in under 0.9 watts per square foot.
